untitled poem

a mouthful of granola

and a sip of strong coffee

then wait

nothing at all

morning’s meditation has cleared no path

through the forest of thoughts

perhaps this is one of those ‘if you don’t think

it will come’ moments

but I catch the thought about not thinking and

realise I can’t look away from the place where

it might emerge

this is no watched pot

but the outcome will be the same

if i keep on focusing right there

so i try to wait without waiting

whilst all the time it was coming anyway

and emerged without any effort

in another place altogether

It is day 9 of napowrimo 2018 and as always I’m hanging with the Toads in the garden, waiting for something…….

I love the feeling of just starting the day and waiting for something to happen. The use of space is effective in creating this moment hanging in time, Paul. I love the lines:
‘morning’s meditation has cleared no path
    through the forest of thoughts’
    and
‘…I catch the thought about not thinking and
realise I can’t look away from the place where
    it might emerge’

“I catch the thought about not thinking and/realise I can’t look away from the place where/
it might emerge” — these lines particularly grabbed me — really enjoyed this poem.

I like the beginning of your day, the beginning of waiting without waiting. I do like this thought:
“morning’s meditation has cleared no path through the forest of thoughts”/. How often this happens to us all.

Hiya Paul and hanks for posting to my prompt! I think you have captured a delicious tension here between the narrator and all the things waiting just beyond the peripheral. I also really liked how you set this in a morning scape, which also mimics back to me as a reader the promise of a new day. Even if it is just a promise of nothing. In addition, these lines really resonated with me:

    this is no watched pot

but the outcome will be the same

if i keep on focusing right there

Thanks for sharing and viva la!

    this is no watched pot

delicious for the delirium in the anticipation of a rush, or flush, or just the separation from the one-ness of it all –

    this is clever and refreshing
it reminds me of “I don’t know what I know other than I know what I know but don’t know it anyhow” ….
