bruised sky

we threw shadows and lover’s sweat about the long night

wild and shapeless with only the moment that mattered

the theatre of the near doomed projected by moonlight to

only two viewers on the still ocean of relationship’s dusk

lunar sea replaced by the rising sun of a bright new dawn

you pinched my bum as I poured coffee into cracked cups

so natural and familiar a thing for you to do but weirdly

the first time it had ever happened in our time together

i supped my coffee slowly and watched the horizon tilt as

the band played on

Day 29 of NaPoWriMo and we are almost at the end…as always i’m hanging with the toads.

Children of the sea are ever at a loss on land, in the circle of the hearth, their hearts awash with restless yearning. Yet they know their solitude is drowning so they keep trying to get inside that circle. Two children of the sea staking a claim on land together here, and the mood is as timeless as it is fleeting and lost.

Great song and a wonderful poem, Paul! That is such an atmospheric opening line, which sets up the reader’s expectations for the rest of the poem. I love the lines:
‘the theatre of the near doomed projected by moonlight to
only two viewers on the still ocean of relationship’s dusk’
and the cheeky bum pinch is a brilliant way to modulate the atmosphere. And those final lines!
