This evening I am host at the Poets Pub. Why not drop by and offer up a poem of your own and read our hugely talented community of writers.
the soul of spring
rose up from the Earth today
filling the bluest of skies
wrapping it’s tender arms
about Winter’s icy heart
to melt it’s stubborn core
a lament trickled from the fells
tinkling it’s song in the burns
an echo of birdsong in response
sap took a peek above ground
sheep sniffed a new smell in the air
all was well in the world today
What a pastoral scene, every shade of green here with the earth’s sprung soul. No matter what humans do to harm her, or help her, she is always faithful with the signs of renewed hope and beauty.
I love the ambiguity of the title, Paul – a soul that’s been released or on that bounces on springs!
I also like the picture in my mind of spring
‘filling the bluest of skies
wrapping it’s tender arms
about Winter’s icy heart
to melt its stubborn core’.
I could hear the tinkling song in the burns, too.
I love this… the hope in a day like this, with the first day of spring… as a new year really…
all is well today
Yes, it is Paul. Loved your write.
It was a truly beautiful day and did carry a whisper of Spring. This winter has definitely been stubborn, this felt so fresh and renewed like that trickle of water.
A celebration and most welcomed!
A lovely welcome to Spring!
That’s how spring should be.
It was today.
About time;
I liked the description of spring melting winter’s icy heart with its tenderness.
I love that smell of new air, that spring day fragrance Paul ~ Looking forward to finally embracing spring here in my part of the world~
“wrapping it’s tender arms about Winter’s icy heart”. I really like that. Winter being warmed away by the caress of Spring
A beautiful paean to the return of life in the northern climes. Pleasant, upbeat, and well-received!
Beautiful. It is equinox, when there begins to be more daylight than dark. My soul responds with delight. Great prompt, Paul. And a wonderful poem.
A stroll full of pastoral gems – the melting heart of winter, the fells’ lament and the sniffing sheep. Gets the sap going.
I love the opening of this beautiful piece of writing. I am waiting for the soul of spring to awaken here. Your words give me hope.
A beautiful welcoming of Spring.! I love wrapping its tender arms around winter’s icy heart.
Beautiful, Paul… though the soul of spring is laggard here.
Such a peaceful and renewed promise in this beautiful poem.
A sweet relief at last. A tender image of spring wrapping arms around stubborn winter. A wonderful act of mercy. I would have given winter a slap for all the inconvenience!
Love the sense of awakening, how your poem let’s us glimpse at Nature being herself, at her children acting naturally…
Luv the wabi sabi effect of this scene

Your poem makes me yearn for Spring to arrive! Beautifully written.
A great poem… I loved the sap peeping above ground… and the crying snow & ice thawing tears!

I love this–a celebration of spring–and of it springing forth.
I love the idea of spring as a soul, a relentless force of nature imposing its will upon winter’s icy grip… love the pacing of this poem as well.
This poem reminds me that I miss the change of seasons.
Cheers,
Mark
Love the hug in this. Spring is coming!
A nice spring poem, Paul, to help get us in the mood. Nature was ready though there was a little remorse from here and there.
“a lament trickled from the fells”
(as a small waterfall up on the hill)
..
‘a lament trickled from the fells tinkling it’s song in the burns an echo of birdsong in response’… this is so powerful!
a lament trickled from the fells…
I adore this line among all your wonderfully descriptive lines.
Ah, spring. I can smell it, feel it from your piece. If only if it can come sooner than it is taking right now.
